Kamakura is one of Japan’s most historic cities. The Shogun’s capital from 1192 to 1333, Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines still dot its wooded
hills. But modern Kamakura is much more than a memory of a glorious past. It is one of the most desirable residential and tourist destinations in Tokyo Metropolitan area, surrounded by rolling hills and set by the sea. Visitors to Kamakura today will fi nd not only robed monks and Zen gardens, but also fashionable shops, elegant homes, and surfers waxing their boards at the beach. In designing the Weekend House Alley, a mix of condominiums and commercial spaces in a highly desirable area next to the Shichirigahama beach, Chiba Manabu Architects set out to fi t this contemporary complex into the urban fabric of a multifaceted historic city. Well-known for his single-family homes as well as his “designer” rental apartments and cooperative housing, Chiba always strives to contextualize his designs, as well as link the interior and exterior spaces.
The design of Weekend House Alley carefully balances the views from each residence, the programmatic requirements of the businesses, and the regulations relating to the site. The main features of the design are the passageways that divide the complex into seven irregularly shaped volumes. These radiating communal corridors provide access to private and commercial units situated in these seven volumes. They also create vistas of the coastline and neighborhood in a manner that echoes the ancient paths that crisscross the hills of Kamakura.
